some folks have asked where to clamp things when assembing. it’s best to:
clamp at the barrel extension (with reaction rod or at upper) when tightening the barrel nut.
clamp at the barrel when loosening a flash hider.
sound of freedom – This was a great set up. I loved being able to customize the set up. Only issue I had was my own fault as a newb to building these. I used a heavy barrel in a slim hand guard. It makes adding attachments tough with clearances. Hoping someday to also get an AR10 from here.
I seated the barrel in my stripped upper receiver and started tightening the barrel nut for my free float handguard. When tightening, I hit a wall a few threads in where it would no longer tighten. At first I was worried that I may have cross threaded it as the first few threads were trashed, so I tried a different receiver and barrel nut from another rifle and met the same resistance so I did not continue tightening. Upon inspection of the barrel, the indexing pin sat higher than the threads by a decent amount, and I had to grind it down to get it below the threads as it could not be pressed further into the barrel. I also had to buy a $50 split thread repair die to fix the threads of the first upper receiver to salvage it to some extent as it was an expensive one, and the barrel nut of my BCM handguard is completely ruined, so I am going to have to replace that as well. It messed up the threads on the barrel nut which in turned damaged the upper receiver threads.
