Want to dimple your ar15 barrel 180 degrees from the gas port but don’t want to waste money on a tool that costs a bunch of money? Use this instead!  This no-frills gadget will help you figure out where to drill that dimple for your gas block set screw if you’ve got a barrel with no dimple.

It’s just a gas block with a hole drilled from the gas port through the top.  Comes with a pointy set screw for centering on the gas port.

Step 1: slide it on the barrel.

Step 2: Center pointy screw on gas port and tighten

step 3: drill a shallow dimple through the gas block hole on opposite side of gas port (180 degrees from the gas port)

Simple as that!  You only need one dimple, 180 degrees from the gas port, and it should work for any gas block.  Virtually all set screw gas blocks have a set screw that is 180 degrees from the gas port.

note: you could maybe use this as an actual gas block, too.. but we wouldn’t necessarily recommend it.

Critical for proper set screw placement – I have built rifles for 30 years now. The older barrels were not dimpled for proper set screw placement so you had to figure a way to place them properly hit or miss. This device allows you to place the dimples for the set screws in EXACTLY the proper place the first time. It is a godsend for DIY’ers, I bought 2 of them!

  3. Cameron Foreman (verified owner)

Awesome – This thing is pretty fu**ing awesome! Worked great but don’t rush when using it. Even the quality of the metal is good so on my next build I will be buying there actual gas block. Even came with a bad ass Koozie so I’m definitely happy! Saved about $20 on not buying an actual jig.

  4. Charles Calp (verified owner)

Works perfectly – Works as intended and couldn’t be easier to use. Great price, too!!

it worked! – It worked well for my build. Take your time and it was right on.

it’s my 1st time having to dimple a barrel and did some research on AI and YouTube. Mid State cheap ass barrel dimple came up as a great alternative to buying a jig. I bought it and a jig from another site, Mid State got here faster. It’s a solid gas block with a hole in the top and a set screw on the other side that goes into your gas port, uses a 5/32″ carbide drill that you need to have or buy. Thanks Mid State, fast delivery and simple to use
