What Makes an AR-15 “Left-Handed”?
One of the most common questions we hear is:
“Do all the parts have to be different?”
The answer is no.
The vast majority of the upper assembly remains exactly the same.
A typical left-handed AR-15 upper only requires three key changes:
- A left-handed upper receiver
- A left-handed bolt carrier group (BCG)
- (Optional but recommended) an ambidextrous charging handle
Everything else is generally the same as a standard AR-15 upper, including:
- Barrel
- Gas block
- Gas tube
- Handguard
- Muzzle device
- Forward assist
- Dust cover (left-hand configuration)
- Most accessories
This means left-handed shooters can enjoy nearly the same flexibility and parts compatibility as standard AR-15 owners.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I convert my existing AR-15 into a left-handed rifle?
Yes. In most cases, you’ll need a left-handed upper receiver and a left-handed bolt carrier group. The barrel, handguard, gas system, and most other components can remain the same. We even offer a ‘lefty Ar15 builder bundle‘ that includes a stripped lefty upper and left handed BCG.
Do left-handed AR-15 uppers use standard barrels?
Yes. Standard AR-15 barrels are used. The barrel extension interfaces with the left-handed bolt, so the barrel itself does not need to be left-hand specific.
Do I need a special handguard?
No.
Any compatible AR-15 free-float or drop-in handguard will work the same on a left-handed build.
Are left-handed AR-15 magazines different?
No.
Standard AR-15 magazines work exactly the same.
Can I use a standard charging handle?
Yes.
However, many left-handed shooters prefer an ambidextrous charging handle because it’s easier to operate from either side of the rifle.
Are left-handed AR-15 parts harder to find?
Generally, yes.
